Abstract Changes in streamflow across the western US illustrate a need to better understand how drought indices derived from climate data track streamflow. Three drought metrics, the (SPEI), and Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) were correlated to water-year runoff for fourteen drainage basins in Idaho from 1950-2010. Two common methods of estimating potential evapotranspiration (PET), the Thornthwaite and Penman-Monteith methods, were considered in both the SPEI and PDSI. Results show that no single metric is universally superior , but rather that correlations vary seasonally and in heterogeneous fashion across the watersheds. Overall, the 9-month SPEI during the spring months most consistently exhibited the highest correlation to streamflow for most regions, particularly the snow-domination basins , while the PDSI exhibited the highest correlation to streamflow in two of the three rain-dominated basins. There was a slight increase in correlation to streamflow for both PDSI and SPEI using PET estimated with the Penman-Monteith method over the Thornthwaite method. Lastly, correlation using a 31-year moving window shows correlations have improved over time for all three metrics, with improvements most notable in drought indices that account for PET.

This study was conducted to determine drought tolerance genotypes with superiority in different stressed environments. To screening quantitative indices of drought tolerance, genotypes of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) were tested in a complete randomized block design with three replications under two different water regimes (irrigated and rainfed). متن کاملEvaluation of the effects of meteorological drought on ground water table fluctuations (Case study: Hormozgan Province, Iran)
Drought as a natural but temporary imbalance of water availability is the interaction between natural environment and human life resulting in diminished water resources availability and reduced carrying capacity of the ecosystems. Drought indices are essential elements for an efficient drought monitoring system. These indices make the transforming information of climatic anomalies easier and al...

متن کاملEvaluation of Leaf Protein Pattern in Wheat Genotypes Under Drought Stress
Drought is one of the most important factors limiting crop yields around the world. Drought stress in plants, the change (increase or decrease) in the production of plant proteins. This research was carried out using bread wheat genotypes. For evaluation of leaf protein pattern in wheat, 10 genotypes were assayed with 3 replications under irrigated (non-stress) and rain-fed (stress) conditions....
